Gerlich, Georg
Person
Biography
Georg and Marianne Gerlich and their five children arrived in New Zealand from Austria in 1874. They sailed from Plymouth on the Stonehouse, arriving in Lyttelton, and settling in Oxford, North Canterbury. The name Gerlich gradually changed to Garlick for convenience of spelling and pronunciation, first appearing in that form in 1882. On Georg and Marianne's tombstone, however, their name is spelt in the old way.
