Scope and Contents

The papers of Guy Bernard Cleaver Bliss include typescript, manuscript and printed papers, and photographs, chiefly of Canterbury matters relating to military, church and local history.

There are two copies of the reminiscences of Lt. Col. Alfred Henry W. Evenden, photographs of him in the Rangiora High School Cadets (ca. 1905), as a soldier (First World War), and a photograph of his father, T.A. Evenden, a lieutenant in the Kumara Volunteer Cadets, 1886. There is a copy of the reminiscences of James Ashworth (Harleston, Sefton) and of George Turner (Christchurch from 1850; he was a clerk for the Provincial Government, and fought in the Crimean War).

There are papers on noise and environmental problems for locals from the Canterbury Timber Products factory at Ashley, North Canterbury, 1976-1981.

The military papers here concern the New Zealand Army and also volunteers, from 1867 until the 1970s. There are papers on Ripapa Island fortifications. The church histories are of North Canterbury Anglican churches. The outsize map is of Sefton, 1875.
