Biographical / Historical
Existence: 24 May 1965 - Present The trust is concerned with improving and regenerating theenvironment in places where people live and work. It sets out to promote higher environmental standards in and immediately around the city of Christchurch. The trust was formed from a movement to save Canterbury University’s former inner-city campus and had its first meeting on 24 May 1965. The trusts constitution was drafted by Alan Brassington(1902-1981) and has been used as a model for civic trusts formed later in other parts of New Zealand. The trust is recognised is its representation on local body committees and working and study groups. Successful campaigns have included preserving the old Government Buildings in Cathedral Square, Provincial Council buildings, former Normal School in Cranmer Square, Lyttelton Timeball, Antigua Boat Sheds and the Peacock Foundation in Hagley Park.
