Biographical / Historical

Dr James Hight (1870 – 1958) and Miss Alice Murial Flora Candy (1888 – 1977) of the History Department of the Canterbury University College, founded the Canterbury Historical Association in 1922. The Association's aim is 'the fostering of public interest in history and historical issues'. During World War Two the Association went into recess but was revived in 1953. They hold monthly meetings, including lectures, for students and members of the public, and administer the JM Sherrard Award which recognises the best research into regional and local history.
