 Collection
Identifier: CCL Archive 0551

Scope and Contents

Photographic collection of John Shier, consisting of photographs from Canterbury and the West Coast.

This a collection of 56 black/white photographs, 18 loose and 38 on nine photo album pages. These pages are in poor condition, being torn and dog-eared, and should be handled with care.

The photographs are of Canterbury and West Coast locations: they are nearly all labelled and dated, but any people shown are not named. They date from 1925-1929. Some photos are stamped on the back with “J. Shier, Chemist”, St. Albans, but there is no proof that he took the photos himself.

Collection from Estate of Mr Shier (Manufacturing jeweller), 10 Sydney Street, Christchurch.

The 18 loose photos are mainly of locations such as Otira, Arthurs Pass, Hokitika, Lake Kaniere, Waiho Gorge etc., but a few are of Sumner, Governors Bay and Peel Forest.

The 38 photographs on the album pages are also of similar locations to the above, but also include Greymouth, and groups of people at Franz Josef glacier. Some show individual houses and small family groups or a single person, but there is no indication who they are. A few show areas close to Christchurch, such as Lyttelton and Dyers Pass.
