Scope and Contents

Photographs and papers relating to the Hopkins family, largely relating to Saltaire, a house in New Brighton built by William Allan Hopkins and occupied by the Hopkins family. Include black and white photographs of the house and a colour photograph of W. Menzie Gibb's painting of Saltaire.

Includes notes concerning the history of Saltaire and its builder, the Gibb's painting and the original Saltaire in Bradford England, copies of family birth, death and marriage certificates and a fax, dated 20 March 2000, from Rowena Hopkins to Richard Greenaway, Genealogy Librarian, Christchurch City Libraries, on the history of the Hopkins family.

Biographical / Historical

A house built in Nth New Brighton named after the new mill and model village built by Sir Titus Salt in Bradford, England, ca. the middle 1800s.

Saltaire was a village built around the mill for approx. 3,000 people: it was unique in England in its time in that it was built specifically for the benefit and welfare of the mill employees and their families, and included schools, a chapel, a hospital and other amenities. The Brighton house was owned by William Allan Hopkins [1857 – 1931]. Photos and notes on Hopkins are included.
