You can use the Robert and Barbara Stewart Library and Archives to find out more about the art and artists in Christchurch Art Gallery’s collection. The library has about 12,000 books, 1,200 artist files and thousands of magazines.

There is also a large archival collection of unpublished material and you can discover this material here.

This collection covers the history of the Gallery itself, its exhibitions and publications, and those of its predecessor the Robert McDougall Art Gallery. You will also find the records of the Canterbury Society of Arts, The Group, and the personal papers, letters and diaries of many other Canterbury artists and art institutions.
