British Empire and Commonwealth Museum papers
Content Description
Papers relating to the unauthorised disposal of New Zealand material from the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum. The Museum operated in Bristol, England from 2002 to 2008. In 2011 the sale of one object from the collection, a maquette of the statue of John Robert Godley in Cathedral Square, Christchurch (by Thomas Woolner), was spotted and as a result it emerged that the Museum's director Gareth Griffiths had sold hundreds of objects from the Museum's collection. This story and his dismissal were widely reported. The papers in this collection include correspondence between New Zealand curators, academics, dealers and government officials who were involved in discovering and responding to this series of events.
