Scope and Contents

Plans for alterations to Beath & Co, later DIC, at 146-154 Cashel Street, on the corner with Colombo Street. Includes exterior elevations, interior floor plans and various technical drawings relating to a number of different alterations to the building between the 1930s and 1980s.

Plans from the 1920s include additions to the show room space by Collins and Harman Architects as well as further alterations in 1926 by S & A Luttrell Architects.

Plans from 1930-1934 includes blueprints and plans relating to the construction of a new building on the corner of Colombo Street and Cashel Street, attached to the existing building by S & A Luttrell Architects. Also includes 1934-1935 plans and blueprints by Architect A H Manson relating to alterations.

Plans from 1957 include further alterations including those for a new dining room by Manson, Seward and Stanton Architects. Includes a folder of specifications titled Alterations to Premises Cashel Street, Christchurch for Messers. Beath & Co. Ltd dated 1957.

Plans from 1960’s include additional alterations in 1965 by W H Trengrove, Trengrove and Marshall Architects. Also includes a watercolour drawing by the same architects showing the Cashel Street elevation to Beaths, mounted on card c.1960s.

Plans from the 1970’s includes 1972 alterations to the Colombo Street side of the building, 1974 plans for new office spaces and 1975 plans for a new building on the Beaths & Co site. All created by W H Trengrove, Trengrove and Marshall Architects. Also included are some specifications relating to a hotel area of Beaths & Co, c.1970s.

Plans from 1980 include those for Beaths & Co following the transfer of ownership to DIC for ground floor and first floor links to Cashfields Mall by Halliday, O'Loughlin & Taylor Architects.

Includes a folder of material documenting the history of Beath & Co leading up to the site becoming the Arthur Barnett Department Store in 1987. Includes plans showing land owned by Beath & Co over time with accompanying annotated aerial photographs. Also includes some written historical information about the history and development of the site leading up to 1999.

Photographs include aerials by V C Browne c.1973 showing the site of Beaths & Co as well as other central city sites. Includes photographs from c.1973 showing the demolition of the 1915 Beaths & Co buildings by Elmar & Ambrose Studios. Also includes a folder of colour photographs c.1970s/1980s of the central city, some featuring Beaths and DIC.
