Custodial History

The time capsule, a copper box, had been placed under the New Brighton Clock Tower at the time the foundation stone was laid at a ceremony on 14 December 1934 by New Brighton Borough Council.

The time capsule was unearthed after the Christchurch Earthquakes when the clock tower was being repaired. The items were then in the possession of the Christchurch City Council Parks Unit and were provided to Christchurch City Council Archives on advice of the Christchurch City Council Heritage Team.

Condition Description

Newspaper fragments are fragile and the copper box is rusted. Newspapers have been conserved and the box has been treated but remains in extremely poor condition with rust damage.

The newspaper fragments are very hard to read and very broken even following conservation. The Christchurch Press newspaper pages have suffered such damage that they are unable to be separated.
