Handwritten letter rom Thomas Conway of West Eyreton, Canterbury to his cousin dated December 27, 1896. In this letter he writes about the drought and difficult farming conditions in the Cust district, the difficulty in obtaining reliable workers, the cost of supplies, and his family.

The first letterbook contains letters dated from 1901 and 1902, the second letterbook contains letters dated from 1904 to 1908. The first volume includes some typed carbon copies of letters from 9 October 1901 to January 1902.
