Biography

The partnership of William Izard and Henry Loughnan began in 1878 and lasted for more than 50 years. Loughnan's sons Robert and Bede joined the firm in the 1920s, and Bede's son Julian carried on the firm as Izard & Loughnan until 1989 when he continued under his own name. William Izard was born in London, and was admitted to the Bar in 1875. He came out to New Zealand in the same year, first to Wellington, then to Christchurch where he set up in practice. He was joined by Henry Loughnan in 1878. Henry Loughnan was born in India, the son of a Judge. The family emigrated to New Zealand in 1868. In 1876 Henry Loughnan was admitted to the Bar in Christchurch, and joined William Izard in 1878.
