Biography

Situated on the corner of Hereford and Colombo Street, Cathedral Square. Originally the Golden Age Hotel was on the site with other wooden buildings. A four storey building (the first in Christchurch) was built in 1886 which included the renamed Hereford Hotel. The hotel was renovated and expanded in 1906 and reopened as The United Service Hotel. A fifth story was added in 1929. Also known as Morten’s building, after the original owner, Richard May Morten, who bought the site in 1865. In 1988 the council placed a demolition order on the building due to earthquake regulations and in 1990 it was demolished
