Biography
In May 1864 a commission was formed by the Canterbury Provincial Government to promote the cultivation and planting of the Government Domain in connection with the object of the newly formed Canterbury Acclimitization Society. In 1866 this became the Park and Domain Board. In 1872 the Park and Domain Board becaume the Canterbury Public Domains Board (with the Canterbury Public Domains Act) and, after the Provincial Government was abolished, their work continued with the 1881 Public Domains Act. The Canterbury Domains Board was renamed the Christchurch Domains Board in 1882. The main role of the Board was the protection and development of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, and Hagley Park (both North and South). The Board amalgamated with Christchurch City Council in 1946.
