Biography
The earliest reference to the management of the parks and gardens in Christchurch is the establishment of the role of Head Gardener for Christchurch City Council in 1914. Between 1917-1919 the role of Superintendant of Parks and Gardens was put in place, which replaced the role of Head Gardener for the Council.
Between 1922-1923 the Parks and Gardens Department is established. The Department starts with just the Superindentant, however by 1974 the Department had expanded to include cemeteries and leisure facilities including Queen Elizabeth II Park and swimming pools.
In 1975 this department was renamed the Reserves Department but retained all of the same functions.
