Biography

George Bonnington Limited, manufacturing chemist, was founded originally in Nelson by George Bonnington. He moved to Christchurch and opened a shop in High Street in 1866, it later moved to Strange’s Buildings. It became a private company in 1908. There was a Bonnington’s Building on High Street, next to Strange’s Building, the Italianate facade still remains. In 1912 the company moved to 166 Cashel Street,the corner of Cashel and High streets. The company is most famous for Bonnington’s Irish Moss.
