Biography
Edward Clarke, solicitor, appears to have practised in Christchurch before shifting in
about 1874 to Rangiora to start a practice on High Street. In Wises directory 1872 –
1873 an Edward Clarke, a solicitor, is listed as living in Ferry Road with an office at
the corner of High and Cashel Streets. In Wises directory for 1875-1876 he is listed
under Rangiora. He first appears under the Rangiora listing in 1874 Southern
Provinces Almanac.
In the 1875-1876 general electoral roll for Kaiapoi his address is given as Ashley
Road, Rangiora.
He died intestate at Rangiora on 14 May 1885 aged 67. He was survived by his wife
Anne Maria (nee Young) whose address is given as Christchurch in his will} and
three children Cowley Edward (23), Thomas Ernest (20) and Mary Tuthill (17). At
the time of his death Edward Clark was living in North Street. He is buried in the
Rangiora Church of England cemetery.
Mrs Clarke remarried in 1890 aged 55. Her second husband, John Broughton, a
widower, was originally from Yorkshire. The church register at St John the Baptist,
Latimer Square, lists Alfred Cox of Merivale (formerly of Orari? as a witness.
