Biography
Richard May Morten came to Canterbury in 1860. He became a wealthy sheepfarmer at Rakaia and elsewhere south-west of Christchurch. In 1865 he bought the block of land on Colombo Street from Cathedral Square through to Hereford Street, known as Morten's Block. Morten's Buildings were built here in about 1885. In about 1905 these buildings became the United Service Hotel, a luxurious establishment which rivalled the Clarendon for the next 80 years. His birth year is believed to be 1823 but some records indicate it may have been 1830.
