Biography
Librarian Margaret Mahy's first stories for children were published in the New Zealand School Journal, from 1961. In 1966 the first of her many very popular books for children were accepted for publication in both Britain and the United States.

Interior of the notebook has notes re characters Sophie, Jonathan, Janine Also includes list of words with definition [unusual words] Also includes a poem beginning "I am not a prig but I say to every tourist... " There are also ideas for three stories- Pig farmer, Testing the biscuit and The bath with claw feet.

Poem / doggerel about Canterbury Public Library staff. Story that begins "Sarah and Emily lived by the sea... " A partial story featuring characters Matilda and Conrad. At rear of volume is a 39 page article or talk written by Margaret about her writing.
