Biography

Charles Greenstreet arrived in Canterbury in 1852, on the William Hyde. In 1858 he married Eliza Mackie, daughter of Charles Mackie, the vicar of Avonside. In 1863 they bought Ringwood Station at Ashburton Forks. The area is also called Greenstreet. They had a townhouse on the corner of Mays and Papanui Roads. Charles' letters, from Melbourne and Geelong, often mention his illness, and he died the same year (1872) in Ashburton. Charles Mackie, Eliza Greenstreet's father, was the first vicar of Avonside, from 1855-1864. He had been holding services in the area from 1852.

Scope and Contents The papers of Charles Hawkins Greenstreet includes correspondence, original manuscripts, photographs and locks of hair.One photograph, 1871, is of the grave of Anne Mackie, Eliza's mother, in Gosport, England. The other two photographs, taken in Christchurch, are unlabelled and undated, but are most probably of Charles and Eliza's sons.
