Brittenden, Frederick

 Person

Biography

Frederick Brittenden came first to Lyttelton in August 1878, from Deal, England. He went on by train to Timaru, where he was met by Ted and taken to the house and shop of Mr. Foster, a former Deal boatman. Here he was to live while looking for work as a clerk. His letter describes the voyage out in detail, and then describes Timaru. Because of the Deal boatmen and their houses, called Deal town, in Timaru, he describes himself as coming from Deal to Deal.
