Photocopy of typed transcript of a letter from Frederick Brittenden to his mother in Deal, Kent, UK describing his voyage to New Zealand dated 10-9-1878. The connection with the Christchurch Brittenden family, if any, is not known.

The letter is written from Timaru after his arrival on 7 August 1878. He left England just after Easter, probably towards the end of April as the voyage lasted 108 days. In Timaru he met up with some of the Deal Boatmen and their families (Arch 564).
