Biography
William Arthur (called Arthur) Aldred was born in 1856 in Christchurch. His father was the Rev. John Aldred, the first resident Wesleyan minister in Canterbury, and former missionary. Arthur Aldred's maternal great-grandfather, Walter Lawry, was a Wesleyan missionary in Tonga.
Arthur Aldred worked for the Bank of New Zealand. In 1900 he married Catherine Barry. During the First World War he was sent to Tonga to take over businesses previously run by Germans.

Aldred family papers
The papers of the Aldred family include correspondence, photographs, postcards, press clippings and posters. The majority of this collection are letters, with two written in Māori. Most of the letters are by Arthur Aldred, writing from Tonga to his wife in New Zealand during the course of the First World War.
