Biography
William Arthur (called Arthur) Aldred was born in 1856 in Christchurch. His father was the Rev. John Aldred, the first resident Wesleyan minister in Canterbury, and former missionary.

Scope and Contents
The papers of the Aldred family include correspondence, photographs, postcards, press clippings and posters. The majority of this collection are letters, with two written in Māori. Most of the letters are by Arthur Aldred, writing from Tonga to his wife in New Zealand during the course of the First World War.
