Biography
John Hall was born in Hull, England in 1824. Hall arrived in Lyttelton aboard the Samarang on 31 July 1852. He began by farming in Canterbury, eventually becoming the sole owner of Terrace Station.
Hall was part of politics throughout the life of the Canterbury Provincial Council (1853–60 and 1863–73). He was also actively in the Christchurch area. He was magistrate in Lyttelton and then in Christchurch between 1856 and 1863. He was elected as the first chairman of the Christchurch City Council from 1862 to 1863.
He was elected into Government in 1879 until 1882, retiring from the House in November 1893. Hall was elected Mayor of Christchurch in 1906 during the year of the International Exhibition in the City. Hall died the following year in 1907.
