Scope and Contents
Photographs of firefighters tackling fires and of fire damage caused to various properties in the Christchurch area.
Scenes of fires actively burning and being extinguished in buildings including the packaging department of Aulsebrook and Co Ltd on the corner of Montreal and St Asaph Streets and at P. and D. Duncan Ltd at 87 St Asaph Street. Others include a car burning on Centaurus Road and of a fire in the hold of a Japan Lines ship Japan Totara at Lyttelton.
Fire damaged premises include Scott Bros., Ltd on Manchester Street; McAlpine's Timber Mill at Southbrook; Taylors Drycleaning plant on Kilmore Street; Municipal Electricity Department Armagh Street building; engineering store room at the Christchurch Technical Institute on Barbadoes Street; auditorium of the Majestic Theatre on Manchester Street; King George Hotel on the corner of Madras and St Asaph Streets; Gough, Gough and Hamer, Ltd on Ensors Road in Opawa; Bryndwr Railway Station; Fleming and Co flour mill on Deans Avenue; Old Stone House in Cashmere and at Linwood North School.
Also includes one photograph of firefighters at the scene of a residential house fire.
