Scope and Contents

Photographs relate to the Addington Railway Workshops. Images feature coachbuilding and train maintenance; as well as photographs of the workshops site itself. Several photographs showcase aerial as well as interior views of the workshops.

Specific workshops featured in the collection include the woodmill; the electric locomotive shop; the traction shop; the machine shop; and the steel wagon shop. The Addington Water Tower is also featured in several photographs.

Various machinery are visible in the photographs such as lathes; boilers; and wagons. Photographs document Addington Railway Workshops' shift from oil to coal in the 1980s.

Notable is the building of a D.S.C class train; the 1889 'W192' train; and the 1979 'Ivanhoe' shunter. Included also is a photograph of the 1963 Minister of Railways, J.B. Gordon.

One photograph is dated 'about 1890' and depicts the Christchurch railway yard.
