Education: Tertiary: Canterbury Capping Week Activities, 1964-1991
Scope and Contents
Photographs of University of Canterbury students participating in a range of Capping Week activities and pranks on the Ilam campus and within the central city. Includes some students from Lincoln University participating in Capping Week activities in the wider Canterbury area.
Activities within central Christchurch include the "Procesh" capping procession where students create, usually political themed, floats and parade them through the city. Includes those of students creating papier mache floats for the "Procesh" and parading them through the city including those of Robert Muldoon.
Those in the Avon River include the annual "Bike Race" and an Alf's Imperial Army battle. Those in Cathedral Square include a liquorice-eating race, students pretending to climb along the floor and of the preparing and selling of the capping week magazine.
Activities in other locations include champagne breakfasts on roundabouts across the city; entrants in the Miss University contest at Ilam; a 4m long pizza being created by Leaning Tower of Pizza in Bishopdale for students and members of the University of Canterbury French Club in Akaroa.
Capping week pranks include a Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid staged theft of the Ranfurly Shield; a car put on the roof of the Government Life building; a toilet left in City Mall; fake ducks and shooters around the Ferrier Fountain by the Town Hall and the fake kidnapping of the Rev R. A. Lowe at Christchurch Airport and a prank on the building of the United States Operation Deep Freeze base also at Christchurch Airport.
Pranks on the University of Canterbury Ilam campus include a boat suspended from the Philosophy Department building; gnomes and other statues placed in the fountain outside the James Hight Library and of pine tree seedlings planted around the Ilam campus grounds.
