Scope and Contents

The records of T. Armstrong & Co. department store include photographs of the building and newspaper cuttings detailing the history of the department store. The original photographs are unlabelled and undated, and there are labelled and dated photocopies. The cuttings include a newspaper clipping concerning the builder Gus van Dongen, who worked on the Armstrong's building, as well as manuscript historical notes.

21 black and white photographs showing various aspects of the premises of T. Armstrong & Co., Christchurch, in the 1930s. There are also two sets of photocopies with captions. 12 photocopied newspaper cuttings showing various stages in the Armstrong department store's history. The store was founded in 1880 by Thomas and Mary Armstrong and traded for 88 years until sold in November 1968. The cuttings include photographs of the original Armagh and Colombo Street site and of a branch in High Street which was sold in 1955.
