Biographical / Historical
Existence: 1853 - 1876 In 1852, New Zealand was divided up into six provinces and the Canterbury Provincial Council was created. This elected Council, led by an elected superintendent, looked after the affairs of the Province until their final sitting on 18 June 1875, shortly before the Provincial system of government was abolished on 31 October 1876.
