Biography
Ballantynes was started by David Clarkson, his wife Esther, and sister Elizabeth Clarkson as Dunstable House in 1854 from their cottage in Cashel St. The business was bought in 1864 by William Pratt then again in 1872 by John Ballantyne with a Timaru Branch being opened in 1883. Ballantynes suffered considerable damage in the February 2011 earthquake and was closed for 8 months for building repairs. Reopened on 29th October 2011.

Ballantyne's floor plans
Photocopies of the floor plans of Ballantyne's department store as they were at the time of the fire in 1947. The plans include the names of departments and the staff in charge.

One photograph is taken looking down onto the roof of the burning building. Four of the photographs have the name Sandra Moore written on the back, and the original envelope has "Property of T. Moore" written on it.
