Biography

The Avon Road Board began in 1862 and was initially under the juristiction of Selwyn County Council.

The Avon Road Board had control of both roading and drainage in areas outside of the Christchurch City Council boundaries until 1876 when the Christchurch Drainage Board was placed in charge of the latter.

St Albans Borough Council was formed in 1881 from the old Avon Road Board District. New Brighton Borough was established in 1897 from the former riding of the Avon Road Board.

The Avon Road Board amalgamated into the newly formed Waimairi County Council in 1910. Waimairi County Council became Waimairi District Council in 1982 and the district was then amalgamated with Christchurch City Council in 1989.
