Biography

The Parks and Recreation Unit was established in 1977 and was renamed from the Reserves Department. The Unit managed all the Council owned parks across the Christchurch City Council area including the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. The unit was also responsible for leisure facilities and stadiums including Queen Elizabeth II Park and swimming pools.

Following the 1989 amalgamation of a number of authorities in the wider Christchurch area, the Parks and Recreation Unit became the Parks Unit as part of the Technical Services Group. Responsibiltiy for leisure facilities became part of the newly created Civic Facilities Unit as part of the Metropolitan Services Group.
