The Christchurch Drainage Board was created in 1875 by The Christchurch District Drainage Act, 1875. The Drainage Board had a wide ranging brief, and established sewer systems, waste treatment, management of storm water, drains, and rivers, across Christchurch, and in the surrounding boroughs, and county council areas.
The first meeting was held on the 4th January 1876.
Control of drainage was passed from the Avon Road Board to the Christchurch Drainage Board when it was established in 1876.
The Christchurch Board of Health was initially under the provisions of the Christchurch Drainage Board. Public health stopped being administered by the Drainage Board in 1885.
